The third edition of Sociology of Law has been updated. It includes more illustrative examples and some new sections. I have benefited greatly from many critical discussions about the book with numerous friends since the last edition. Bruce Arrigo and Stuart Henry have been especially supportive of this undertaking in their continuous critical dialogues. I have also bene- fited from the continuous input from students who have used this book for their course. The book is still meant to be read sequentially. The earlier chapters lay the groundwork for understanding in the later chapters. This book offers a basic understanding of key concepts in the sociology of law. It does not conduct an exhaustive review of the literature, particularly his- torical developments traced back to the dawn of civilization. It does not do systematic critiques of the various perspectives.
