This introduction discusses modifications in the field of ‘philology’ in the nineteenth century and the discipline’s previous history since the late six-teenth century. IIn the 1960s, the ‘Oulipo’ group of French writers and philosophers developed, as part of their playful pseudoscience of ‘pataphysics’, a concept they called ‘le plagiat par anticipation’ (plagiarism by anticipation). And while we will have much more to say about anticipatory plagiarism, a few words about this brilliantly inventive and peculiarly disciplined group are necessary to distinguish them from other, notably Russian, twentieth-century literary innovators.

The work of local artist, Nereo Costantini, the sculpture of Juliet was fi nanced by the Lions’ Club of Verona, completed in 1968 and displayed, for the fi rst time, in 1972. Dates are suggestive, and it was presumably in the wake of the success of the Franco Zeffi relli 1968 fi lm version of Romeo and Juliet that the Italian municipal- ity decided to commission its own memorial to Shakespeare’s creation. In so doing, the city authorities showed themselves responsive to a series of artistic rewritings and accre-tions. For Zeffi relli’s screen statement is but one entry in the continuum of envisionings of Romeo and Juliet, and prior to this the director had worked on Shakespearean stageproductions and operatic interpretations.

Gothic literature

The study of English literature in the early twenty-fi rst century is host to an exhilarating range of critical approaches, theories, and his-torical perspectives. ‘English’ ranges from traditional modes of study such as Shakespeare and Romanticism to popular interest in national and area literatures such as those of the United States, Ireland, and the Caribbean. The subject also spans a diverse array of genres from tragedy to cyberpunk, incorporates such hybrid fi elds of study as Asian American literature, Black British literature, creative writing, and literary adaptations, and remains eclectic in its methodology.

Ceramics and Atlantic Connections: Late Roman and Early Medieval Imported Pottery on The Atlantic Seaboard

The central aim of the Ceramics and Atlantic Connections Symposium was to consider recent and ongoing research on pottery imported to the Atlantic Seaboard between c. AD 400-700, reflecting an increased international interest in the archaeology and economy of this region in Late Antiquity and the early medieval period. Our hope was that the event would facilitate comparisons between groups of imported ceramics found at Late Antique sites along the Atlantic Seaboard, including western Britain, western France, Ireland, Portugal and north-west Spain.
