Phylogenomics

All life on earth shares a common ancestor, and the aim of phylogenetic systematics is to reconstruct the tree or network of life. Shortly after the availability of the first pro tein sequences, molecular phylogenetic approaches were developed to understand the evolutionary relationships between proteins (or genes). It became clear that gene trees will also help to unravel the phylogeny of species. The introduction of Sanger sequencing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) paved the way that genetic approaches became available across the scientific community and contributed to the rise of molecular phylogenetics. At the end of the 1990s, results from single-gene studies challenged the century-old textbook view of evolutionary relationships of many groups (e.g. animals, plants).

Theoretical grammar and lexicology, which study the structure of the English language, are an integral part of linguistic theoretical modules and are taught as a separate subject in English philology departments. The main purpose of theoretical grammar is to teach students the grammatical structure of the English language, as well as to introduce them to linguistic concepts and controversial issues of linguistics.

International Humanitarian Action

NOHA (The Network on Humanitarian Action) is an international association of 12 European universities and five global partner universities. The aim of NOHA is to enhance professionalism in the humanitarian sector through education and training, research and publications, and a variety of other projects. The NOHA Joint Master’s Programme in International Humanitarian Action lies at the centre of NOHA’s activities. It is managed and executed by more than 150 academics from a range of disciplines. The process involves anthropologists, lawyers, logisticians, managers, medical experts, political scientists and sociologists coordinating and constantly refining a unique programme on humanitarian action, a subject that has not been taught at universities for all too long.

LATEX in 24 Hours

The necessity for writing this book was felt long back, during my Ph.D. work, when I saw students and researchers struggling with LATEX for preparing their articles and theses. A very limited number of books on LATEX are available in markets. Of course, a lot of resources on this subject can be obtained freely from the internet. However, most of the books emphasize on detailed documentation of LATEX, while the internet-based resources are topic-specific. But people are either unable or not interested to spare time, during their busy schedules of research works, to under- stand and learn the detailed genotype of LATEX covered in books, or to collect materials from different websites.

Applied Chemistry

The first edition of this book appeared 10 years ago. This book is the result of teaching in the Applied Chemistry (Dr. H.D. Gesser, the Chemistry 2240 course) as well as in the Water Quality Analysis for Civil Engineers (Dr. O.V. Roussak, the CHEM 2560 course) to second year engineering students for many years at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). Much has transpired in science during this period and that includes applied chemistry. The major change in this new edition that becomes obvious is the addition of several (eight) experiments to accompany the book and the course for which it was intended. A new solutions manual is also a valuable asset to the second edition of the book.

The purpose of this new book is to fill a void that has appeared in the instruction of digital circuits over the past decade due to the rapid abstraction of system design. Up until the mid-1980s, digital circuits were designed using classical techniques. Classical techniques relied heavily on manual design practices for the synthesis, minimization, and interfacing of digital systems. Corresponding to this design style, academic textbooks were developed that taught classical digital design techniques. Around 1990, large-scale digital systems began being designed using hardware description languages (HDLs) and automated synthesis tools. Broad-scale adoption of this modern design approach spread through the industry during this decade.

International Perspectives on Psychotherapy

Witmer, who later became one of the cofounders of the American Psychological Association, thought that the goal of clinical psychology should be similar to that of medicine to improve the human condition (Witmer, 1897). This notion significantly expanded the boundaries of the young discipline, which was primarily defined by experimental psychology to simply study the nature of psychological phenomena (McReynolds, 1997).

Grammar for Teachers

The first edition of Grammar for Teachers: A Guide to American English for Native and Non-Native Speakers was the result of my frustrations over many years of teaching structure courses and not being able to find an appropriate grammar text for the pre-service and in-service teachers enrolled in these classes. The students in these courses represented a variety of teaching backgrounds: pre-service teachers, ESL and EFL teachers at all levels and teaching in all types of programs, native and non-native speakers of English, content-area teachers with ESL students in their classes needing additional certification or endorsement, and many others.

Bayesian Essentials with R

The purpose of this book is to provide a self-contained entry into practical and computational Bayesian statistics using generic examples from the most common models for a class duration of about seven blocks that roughly correspond to 13–15 weeks of teaching (with three hours of lectures per week), depending on the intended level and the prerequisites imposed on the students. (That estimate does not include practice—i.e., R programming labs, writing data reports—since those may have a variable duration, also depending on the students’ involvement and their programming abilities.) The emphasis on practice is a strong commitment of this book in that its primary audience consists of graduate students who need to use (Bayesian) statistics as a tool to analyze their experiments and/or datasets.
