It is significant that the first medical description of the clinical and genetic features of haemophilia was by the ‘‘father of surgery’’ Abu al-Qasim Khalaf bin ‘Abbas el-Zahrawi (940?--1031 C.E.), so called for his extensive original descriptions of operative techniques and instrumentation. Characteristically he also described a method for stopping bleeding in haemophilia by local pressure and cauterisation, which he had witnessed.

Social phobia and disruptive social anxiety are features of the lives of many thousands of people. But exactly what is social phobia? What causes it? What is its nature and what kinds of treatments can improve it? Using key concepts and methods and a substantive body of research, this book aims to answer these questions and clarify social phobia by means of critical discussions and examination of evidence. It takes a skeptical stance towards the received view of social phobia as a species of disease caused by a deficient inner mechanism and considers and alternative construal of social phobia as a purposeful interpersonal pattern of self-overprotection from social threats. Bonney’s Gynaecological Surgery

Next year, Bonney ’ s Gynaecological Surgery celebrates its 100th birthday, the fi rst edition having been published in 1911 by Comyns Berkeley and Victor Bonney. In those 100 years, major advances in anaesthetics, transfusion services, antibiotics and instrument development have not only resulted in safer surgery for the patient but also have allowed increasing innovation in surgical procedures.
