Plant-driven design

This book is for lovers of plants, nature, and gardens—in particular those who are inspired by this love to make wonderful gardens. The ideas and opinions filling the pages that follow arise from one premise: gardens exist because of gardeners, not designers. And yet this is a book about garden design. In it we aim to unite the often disparate roles of designer and gardener, and the work of creating and planting.

The engineering of foundations

As discussed in the previous paragraph, the design and analysis of slopes and retaining structures are an integral part of foundation engineering; accordingly, these topics are also included in this book. Retaining structures are used very often in connection with foundation works. For example, in urban areas, where space is restricted, retaining structures allow the construction of underground facilities, such as parking garages, underground shopping malls, subway stations, and the like. Although more incidental to foundation works, slope instability failures must also be prevented. In foundation works, temporary excavations are sometimes planned in such a way as to leave temporary soil slopes to support the excavation walls. Another situation in which slope stability becomes an issue is when the building or structure is located in a hilly or mountainous area, where a well- designed foundation will serve no purpose if the structure is founded on a potential sliding soil or rock mass.

The big book of lofts

The loft concept has, over time, become an architectural inspiration. Thanks to its total integration and proliferation in large cities, the loft is no longer considered a new or alternative type of dwelling. Although there are still many lofts that serve as places to live and work, today more and more are used solely as a dwelling. Nowadays many constructions that are not technically true lofts incorporate conventional characteristics with personalized elements in order to achieve the loft aesthetic—polished cement floors, brick walls, visual beams and stone and iron finishes. These features, originally included due to lack of funds available to rehabilitate or adapt the space, have become the true essence of these types of dwellings.
