The Architectural Detail

When I wrote the following pages, or rather when I began them, I lived in a third-floor flat overlooking the green at Cambridge University’s Downing College. It was a familiar landscape, much like the Lawn of the University of Virginia, my own school. The Lawn was begun nineteen years after the founding of Downing in 1800, and there are remarkable similarities between the two landscapes: both have central greens; both greens are flanked by ranges with pavilions, and both have a large central building closing one end. There are also significant differences. William Wilkins’ Downing is Greek Revival in form and built of Ketton stone, whereasThomas Jefferson’s Virginia is more Palladianinfluenced and built of brick and wood.

Такая форма изложения материала не яв ляется чисто литературным приемом. Она преследует цель дать наглядное представление о методике, которую следует применять при индивидуальной работе с верующими.

Кодекс общности.

Дезами - один из наиболее интересных представителей французского утопического коммунизма 40-х годов ХІХ в. Он принадле жал к материалистическому крылу коммунистического движения своего времени. В 30- 40-х годах он участвовал в тайных революционных обществах, в том числе в обществе «Времен года», организовавшем восстание в мае 1839 г. В 1840 г. он издавал журнал «L'Egali- taire», связанный, повидимому, с обществом <<Travailleurs-Egalitaires»; был, несомненно, близок к редакции журнала «Le Communau- taire», выступал на первом коммунистическом банкете в Бельвиле. В ряде изданных Дезами в 40-х годах памфлетов он подверг резкой кри- тике мирный, «икарийский коммунизм» Кабе (в журнале Кабе «Populaire» Дезами в течение некоторого времени сотрудничал) и «христианский социализм» Ламенне. В 1842-43 гг. он выпустил в свет самое значительное свое произведение «Кодекс общности».

There are considered basic types of normal weight cement concrete, lightweight and cellular concrete, non-cement mineral binders concrete, mortars. The book is addressed to students and post-graduate students of construction specialties of higher educational establishments, scientists and technologists.

Detail in Contemporary Concrete Architecture

Concrete, despite its image as a modern material, was invented by the Romans. Its use in structures such as the Pantheon in Rome allowed for the first time the formation of large spans. Despite concrete’s manifold qualities its early use was limited, and, like many other technologies, after the fall of the Roman Empire it was nearly forgotten. Over the next thousand years the use of concrete declined to almost nothing and extant examples of concrete as a construction material from this period are infrequent. In 1756 the process of making cement, the key material for making concrete, was essentially reinvented. This was the work of the pioneering British engineer John Smeaton, who conducted experiments with hydraulic lime and a combination of pebbles and powdered brick as aggregate. Through the nineteenth century concrete continued to be developed as a structural construction material.
