Our Good Earth A Natural History of Soil
The dust lifted up out of the fields and drove gray plumes into the air the finest dust did not settle back to earth, but disappeared into the darkening sky…the corn fought the wind with its weakened leaves until the roots were freed by the prying wind and then each stalk settled wearily sideways...and the wind cried and whimpered over the fallen corn.

ON SITE GEOARCHAEOLOGY ON A NEOLITHIC TELL SITE IN GREECE:
In Southeast Europe, the majority of tell sites are in the areas adjacent to or geographically close to the Near East, such as Bulgaria, Greece, Southern Romania, and in the Central Balkans, in Serbia as far north as the Danube river (e.g., Lloyd, 1963). In terms of architecture, tell settlements seem to offer an uninterrupted sequence of living horizons, and good preservation of houses, and consequently more attention archaeologically

Introduction to Potable Water Treatment Processes
Being able to turn on a tap and fill a glass of water to drink is something we tend to take for granted but the quality of the drinking water at any tap depends on many factors going all the way back to the original source of the water, how it has been treated and how

Introduction to Intelligent Robotics
washing the dishes, building a house, assembling a bicycle, etc. Take a closer look at these actions, and you’ll notice that they require a huge number of skills: recognizing the objects; estimating where they are; discriminating between “obstacles” and the objects you are really interested in; planning what to do and how to do it; moving arms, hands, and fingers to the right places and in the correct way in order to bring the objects where you want them; in the meantime continuously adapting the motions to inputs from all of your senses (vision, touch, and hearing being the most relevant for manipulation tasks). You seldom pause to think about the utmost complexity of these “automatically” executed actions. Indeed, none of these actions is easy to automate. This text will teach why. It covers the fundamentals of how people have tried to reach this ultimate goal of the “ artificially intelligent machine”: the robot. The text attacks the problem from both the engineering side of the problem (i.e., those things for which engineers have come up with solutions that basically rely on the application of the laws of physics or the theorems of mathematics) and the artificial intelligence side (where human behaviour has been the major source of inspiration). The real breakthrough of “intelligent” robots will most probably only be achieved if the engineering and AI sides can meet and join their forces. Hence, the major goal of this text is to fill the gap between both approaches. Students with an engineering background will learn what “information” means, and “uncertainty,” and “reasoning;” other students will learn the principles of how machines move and how sensors make models of the real world.

Mechatronic Systems Design
This is the translated English edition of the book “Systementwurf me- chatronischer Systeme” published by Springer in January 2010. For the motivation, background and concept of presentation, the obliging reader is referred to the preface of the German edition, which follows. Already in the course of preparing the German book and studying the vast literature in this subject area, I recognized that there still exists some room on the international mechatronics stage for the material presented in this monograph. Moreover, the many positive comments of colleagues and students on the German edition encouraged me to think of starting a sec- ond round with an English edition. From the very beginning, it was clear to me that such a project could on- ly be successful with translation support from a native speaker having broad and excellent knowledge of engineering, and particularly mechatron- ics. Luckily, a previous stay at the Stanford Aerospace Robotics Lab brought me into contact with the best possible partner for this purpose: Dr. Kristof Richmond. As a fully bilingual native speaker, a highly quali- fied Stanford graduate, and an intelligent, critical, and altogether most clever scientific partner, he combines all of the talents which I did not real- ly expect to find in one person. The joint work on this English edition was therefore extremely smooth, mutually enriching, and, in the age of internet and Skype, never bounded by the cross-Atlantic separation between Ger- many and Iowa. A big thanks to Kristof for this great job.

Traffic Engineering
The transportation system is often referred to as the nation's "lifeblood circulation system." Our complex system of roads and highways, railroads, airports and airlines, waterways, and urban transit systems provides for the movement of people and goods within and between our densest urban cities and the most remote outposts of the nation. Without the ability to tavel and to transpot goods, society must be stmctured around small self-suicient communities, each of which produces food and mateial for all of its needs locally and disposes of its wastes in a similar manner. The benefits of economic specialization and mass production are possible only where transportation exists to move needed materials of production to centralized locations, and finished products to widely dispersed consumers.
