TRENDS IN SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: INFLUENCES OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE ON PROFESSIONAL CHANGE

As school psychology enters the new millennium, policy makers are demanding that steps be taken to ensure the safety of schools. This article argues that school psychology should provide a primary leadership role in this initiative based on their professional training and expertise. Furthermore, the tensions created by social expectation to implement violence-prevention and intervention programs will provide the incentive and momentum for school psychology to redefine itself in the 21st century. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc

Mistreating Psychology in the Decades of the Brain

We systematically mistreat psychological phenomena, both logically and clinically. This article explores three contentions: that the dominant discourse in modern cognitive, affective, and clinical neuroscience assumes that we know how psychology/biology causation works when we do not; that there are serious intellectual, clinical, and policy costs to pretending we do know; and that crucial scientific and clinical progress will be stymied as long as we frame psychology, biology, and their relationship in currently dominant ways. The arguments are developed with emphasis on misguided attempts to localize psychological function via neuroimaging, misunderstandings about the role of genetics in psychopathology, and untoward constraints on health-care policy and clinical service delivery. A particular challenge, articulated but not resolved in this article, is determining what constitutes adequate explanation in the relationship between psychology and biology.

THE NEW HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY:A Review and Critique

In the past 30 years, the “new history of psychology” and its adherents haveadvocated a critical approach to scholarship, increased use of primary sources, afocus on sociopolitical forces, and the active inclusion of psychologists fromunderrepresented groups. This article argues that many scholars exaggerate thedifferences between old and new history of psychology, and that where the differ-ences are indeed large, those discrepancies reveal certain limitations unique to thenew history approach. These limitations, presented in the form of 5 questions posedto new historians, lead to a discussion of professional issues in the history ofpsychology.

The New History of Psychology: Some (Different) Answers to Lovett's Five Questions. Correction to Brock.

The professionalization of the history of psychology from the 1960s led to significant changes in the way that history was written. Several authors tried to summarize these changes in the 1980s, and Laurel Furumoto’s (1989) G. Stanley Hall lecture, “The new history of psychology” is the best-known example of this genre. This journal published a critique of the new history by Benjamin R. Lovett (2006) with the title, “The new history of psychology: A review and critique,” and it is still being cited as an authoritative source. The article consists of 3 parts. First, the author attempts to show that the new history is not as different from the old as its proponents claim. He then discusses some problems that he considers to be unique to the new history, and he presents them in the form of 5 questions for the new historians, which he then goes on to answer himself. Finally, he discusses the problematic relationship between critical history and psychology. This article is a reply to Lovett’s article. The author argues that the new history is different from the old in every way that Lovett claims that it is not. It critically analyzes Lovett’s answers to his own 5 questions and offers some alternative answers to these questions. It also suggests that many psychologist-historians are opposed to new history of psychology, especially in its critical versions, and that this explains why Lovett’s article has been uncritically received.
