This book is compiled to meet the needs of students taking a course in Modem English Lexicology which forms a part of the curricula of Foreign Language Institutes, Teachers’ Training Collages and Philological and Translation Departments of Universities. It is also intends for post graduates and all those who are interested in the English language and its vocabulary. The implication is that it is possible to show that the vocabulary of every particular language is a system constituted by interdependent elements related in certain specific ways. The present book makes no pretention to deal with the whole vast field of English Lexicology

Principles of Microeconomics

One may wonder why I think that it makes sense to add yet another introductory textbook to the overfilled shelf of well-established books on microeconomics. There are three reasons that motivated me to do so. First, a lot of textbooks in economics want to make one believe that the theories presented are more or less context-free and objective. This is a wrong and dangerous belief. First of all, all theories are embedded in an intellectual milieu from which they borrow and on which they build. No man is an island, and no scientific theory is either. The tendency to shun any contextualisations of the theories comes at the risk of blindness towards the implicit assumptions, value judgements and epistemes on which the theory depends.

Phylogenomics

All life on earth shares a common ancestor, and the aim of phylogenetic systematics is to reconstruct the tree or network of life. Shortly after the availability of the first pro tein sequences, molecular phylogenetic approaches were developed to understand the evolutionary relationships between proteins (or genes). It became clear that gene trees will also help to unravel the phylogeny of species. The introduction of Sanger sequencing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) paved the way that genetic approaches became available across the scientific community and contributed to the rise of molecular phylogenetics. At the end of the 1990s, results from single-gene studies challenged the century-old textbook view of evolutionary relationships of many groups (e.g. animals, plants).

Theoretical grammar and lexicology, which study the structure of the English language, are an integral part of linguistic theoretical modules and are taught as a separate subject in English philology departments. The main purpose of theoretical grammar is to teach students the grammatical structure of the English language, as well as to introduce them to linguistic concepts and controversial issues of linguistics.

International Humanitarian Action

NOHA (The Network on Humanitarian Action) is an international association of 12 European universities and five global partner universities. The aim of NOHA is to enhance professionalism in the humanitarian sector through education and training, research and publications, and a variety of other projects. The NOHA Joint Master’s Programme in International Humanitarian Action lies at the centre of NOHA’s activities. It is managed and executed by more than 150 academics from a range of disciplines. The process involves anthropologists, lawyers, logisticians, managers, medical experts, political scientists and sociologists coordinating and constantly refining a unique programme on humanitarian action, a subject that has not been taught at universities for all too long.

LATEX in 24 Hours

The necessity for writing this book was felt long back, during my Ph.D. work, when I saw students and researchers struggling with LATEX for preparing their articles and theses. A very limited number of books on LATEX are available in markets. Of course, a lot of resources on this subject can be obtained freely from the internet. However, most of the books emphasize on detailed documentation of LATEX, while the internet-based resources are topic-specific. But people are either unable or not interested to spare time, during their busy schedules of research works, to under- stand and learn the detailed genotype of LATEX covered in books, or to collect materials from different websites.

Applied Chemistry

The first edition of this book appeared 10 years ago. This book is the result of teaching in the Applied Chemistry (Dr. H.D. Gesser, the Chemistry 2240 course) as well as in the Water Quality Analysis for Civil Engineers (Dr. O.V. Roussak, the CHEM 2560 course) to second year engineering students for many years at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). Much has transpired in science during this period and that includes applied chemistry. The major change in this new edition that becomes obvious is the addition of several (eight) experiments to accompany the book and the course for which it was intended. A new solutions manual is also a valuable asset to the second edition of the book.

The purpose of this new book is to fill a void that has appeared in the instruction of digital circuits over the past decade due to the rapid abstraction of system design. Up until the mid-1980s, digital circuits were designed using classical techniques. Classical techniques relied heavily on manual design practices for the synthesis, minimization, and interfacing of digital systems. Corresponding to this design style, academic textbooks were developed that taught classical digital design techniques. Around 1990, large-scale digital systems began being designed using hardware description languages (HDLs) and automated synthesis tools. Broad-scale adoption of this modern design approach spread through the industry during this decade.
