Strategic Retail Management

The economic importance of retailing is constantly increasing, as can be seen from the development of many countries across Europe, America and Asia. In highly developed countries, retailers are taking an increased leadership role in every distribution channel. Expansion strategies, retail branding strategies, innovative solutions for supply chain management and many other developments all re
ect this trend. Transformation countries such as those in Central and Eastern Europe and emerging countries such as China or Brazil are also seeing fundamental changes in retailing structures, which may lead to comparable developments.

Design and Analysis of Experiments

Since writing the first edition of Design and Analysis of Experiments, there have been a number of additions to the research investigator’s toolbox. In this second edition, we have incorporated a few of these modern topics. Small screening designs are now becoming prevalent in industry for aiding the search for a few influential factors from amongst a large pool of factors of potential interest. In Chap. 15, we have expanded the material on saturated designs and introduced the topic of supersaturated designs which have fewer observations than the number of factors being investigated.

Statistical Learning from a Regression Perspective

Over the past 8 years, the topics associated with statistical learning have been expanded and consolidated. They have been expanded because new problems have been tackled, new tools have been developed, and older tools have been refined. They have been consolidated because many unifying concepts and themes have been identified. It has also become more clear from practice which statistical learning tools will be widely applied and which are likely to see limited service. In short, it seems this is the time to revisit the material and make it more current.

Statics and Mechanics of Structures

The theory of statics of structures has developed from intuition via gradual refinement to its current state, where the basic principles are put into a systematic framework that enables precise analysis. Although the basic laws governing statics of structures have been known for several centuries, the methods of analysis have developed considerably over the last decades. At the current state of this development an introductory book on statics should aim at the dual goal of providing sufficient background for developing an intuitive understanding of structures, and at the same time lay a solid foundation for modern analysis, typically made by computational techniques. In this vein the present book makes extensive use of simple but realistic examples to develop familiarity and understanding of how structures carry and distribute the loads through the structural members to the supports.

SPSS for Starters and 2nd Levelers

This small book addresses different kinds of data files, as commonly encountered in clinical research and their data analysis on SPSS software. Some 15 years ago serious statistical analyses were conducted by specialist statisticians using mainframe computers. Nowadays, there is ready access to statistical computing using personal computers or laptops, and this practice has changed boundaries between basic statistical methods that can be conveniently carried out on a pocket calculator and more advanced statistical methods that can only be executed on a computer. Clinical researchers currently perform basic statistics without professional help from a statistician, including t-tests and chi-square tests. With the help of userfriendly software, the step from such basic tests to more complex tests has become smaller and more easy to take.

Computational Physics

While the first edition of this textbook was based on a one-year course in computational physics with a rather limited scope, its extent has been increased substantially in the third edition, offering the possibility to select from a broader range of computer experiments and to deepen the understanding of the important numerical methods. The computer experiments have always been a central part of my concepts for this book. Since Java applets, which are very convenient otherwise, have become more or less deprecated and their usage in a browser is no longer recommended for security issues, I decided to use standalone Java programs instea and to rewrite all of the old examples. These can also been edited and compiled with the “netbeans” environment and offer the same possibilities to generate a graphical user interface in short time.

Robotics

The topics of control engineering and signal processing continue to flourish and develop. In common with general scientific investigation, new ideas, concepts and interpretations emerge quite spontaneously and these are then discussed, used, discarded or subsumed into the prevailing sub ject paradigm. Sometimes these innovative concepts coalesce into a new sub-discipline within the broad sub ject tapestry of control and signal processing. This preliminary battle between old and new usually takes place at conferences, through the Internet and in the journals of the discipline. After a little more maturity has been acquired by the new concepts then archival publication as a scientific or engineering monograph may occur.
