LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

After all, linguistics is already well serv ed with introductory texts: expositions and explanations which are comprehensive, authoritative, and excellent in their way. Generally speaking, however, their way is the essentially academic one of providing a detailed initiation into the discipline of li nguistics, and they tend to be lengthy and technical: appropriately so, given their purpose. But they can be quite daunting to the novice. There is also a need for a more general and gradual introduction to language: transitional texts which will ease peop le into an understanding of complex ideas. This series of introductions is designed to serve this need.

Ideas don't come out of thin air. The general ideas in this book represent a synthesis of various intellectual traditions and show the influence of our teachers, colleagues, stu-dents, and friends. In addition, many specific ideas have come from discussions with literally hundreds of people. We cannot adequately acknowledge all of the traditions and people to whom we are indebted. All we can do is to list some of them and hope that the rest will know who they are and that we appreciate them. The following are among the sources of our general ideas.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a big field, and this is a big book. We have tried to explore the full breadth of the field, which encompasses logic, probability, and continuous mathematics; perception, reasoning, learning, and action; fairness, trust, social good, and safety; and applications that range from microelectronic devices to robotic planetary explorers to online services with billions of users. The subtitle of this book is “A Modern Approach.” That means we have chosen to tell the story from a current perspective. We synthesize what is now known into a common framework, recasting early work using the ideas and terminology that are prevalent today. We apologize to those whose subfields are, as a result, less recognizable.

This book, in the ‘red’ series, is one that we are very proud to have been given the opportunity to write. We have both been teaching stylistics courses at different levels of University education for a number of years, and have found that the sheer variety and diversity of practice that it encompasses causes problems in introducing the field to students for the first time. Equally, this diversity is part of its attraction as a discipline which can interest students from all areas of English Studies, from English Language through Literature to Creative Writing, as well as those coming to text analysis from a Linguistics background.
