Understanding Organizations
Charles Handy is a Visiting Professor at the London Business School, a writer and broadcaster and a consultant to a wide variety of organizations in business, government and the volun- tary sector. Born in Dublin, he was educated at Oxford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan School of Management). He has worked for Shell International and as un economist for the Anglo-American Corporation. In 1967 he joined the London Business School to start and direct the Sloan Programme there and to teach managerial psychology and development. He was appointed Professor in 1972 and Governor in 1974. He is the author of Gods of Management (1979), Taking Stock (1983), The Future of Work, with Robert Aitken, Understanding Schools as Organizations (Penguin 1986) and Understanding Voluntary Organizations (Pelican 1988). He was Chairman of the Advisory Panel of the Manage- ment Development Unit of the N.C.V.O. until 1986, and has worked with and advised many voluntary organizations. Charles Handy lives in London and Norfolk with his wife Eliz- abeth. They have two children.
