River Quality. Dynamics and Restoration.
David A. Dunnette (Editor), Antonius Laenen (Editor),What is involved in restoring a river? River Quality: Dynamics and Restoration answers this question through a series of articles and case studies written by some of the field's leading researchers and practitioners. The first part of the book covers the physical, chemical, and biological dynamics of a river system. The second part describes monitoring programs and remedial measures used to restore river systems back to healthy and functional states. The Willamette River in Oregon and the Vistula River in Poland are used to illustrate the dynamic and restoration processes. Each river is in a different stage of restoration and is subjected to different degrees of stress from agriculture, industry, and urbanization. The Willamette is an internationally cited example of a restored river, while the Vistula is a river that has just recently begun the restoration process. Contrasts and comparisons of the two river systems enable readers to learn the limitations of restoration processes and what is involved in the different stages of restoration.

National environmental policies. A Comparative Study of Capacity-Building
Janicke M. а.о,This book is a collection of systematically prepared case studies describing the environmental policy ofthirteen countriesin terms ofcapacity-building. Capacity for environmental policy and management, as the concept is used in this volume, has been defined broadly as a society's "ability (...) to devise and implement solutions to environmental issues as part of a wider effort to achieve sustainable development" (OECD). Since the late 1960s capacity-building in environmental policy and management can be observed across the world. It may have made insufficient progress as yet from an environmentalist point of view, but it has produced some remarkable results, and not only in the industrialised world. In the first chapter we present the conceptual framework that underlies the national case studies.

Global environment outlook 3.
United Nations Environment United Nations Environment Programme (Author),This text provides a comprehensive and authoritative review and analysis of environmental conditions worldwide. The successor to GEO-2000 (1999) and complementary to it, GEO-3 describes policies and achievements in all areas of environmental concern since 1972. It analyses the drivers of environmental change and uses modelling techniques to project the impacts of different policies between 2002 and 2032. It is a crucial assessment for the Earth Summit in Johannesburg in September 2002 and for environmental policy and research worldwide.;It is clearly organized in accessible, non-technical language and supported by colour graphics and quick highlights. With full bibliography and index it should be useful for researchers, teachers, students and policy-makers in environmental science and policy, geography, politics and international affairs.

Economics of the Enviroment. Theory and Policy.
Horst Siebert,"The labor of nature is paid, not because she does much, but because she does little. In proportion as she becomes niggardly in her gifts, she exacts a greater price for her work. Where she is munificently benefi cent, she always works gratis." David Ricardo * This book interprets nature and the environment as a scarce resource. Whereas in the past people lived in a paradise of environmental superabundance, at pre sent environmental goods and services are no longer in ample supply. The envi ronment fulfills many functions for the economy: it serves as a public-con sumption good, as a provider of natural resources, and as receptacle of waste.
